    Pre-purchase Inspections

Take The Risk Out of Buying a Used Car

Buying a second hand car always involves an element of risk, especially if you are purchasing it from someone online as opposed to a dealership; dealerships are registered businesses so there are certain legal obligations that they have to uphold, but when you are buying a car privately off someone you’ve never met before, the legalities can be a bit of a grey area.

If you are thinking of buying a used car, we recommend bringing it into Sunshine Steering first for a full top-to-toe vehicle inspection before you sign-off on the papers – we’ll help you avoid buying a dud by letting you know if the car is a sound investment or if it requires a lot of repair work.

    Sunshine Steering are:

    • Members of the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers (IAME)
    • REPCO Authorised Repair Station
    • Certified RACQ Mechanics

If you’ve got any questions about our pre-purchase inspection service, or would like us to take a look at a vehicle you’re thinking of purchasing, give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 today.

    Pre-Purchase Inspections

The pre-purchase inspection process at Sunshine Steering is quick yet thorough – we have a detailed check list of all of the different elements of the car’s motor, steering, wheels/tyres, electrical, transmission and brakes that we run through. As we inspect each element we compile a report that you will be handed at the end of the inspection – this will help you decide whether or not to purchase the car.

The pre-purchase inspection is much more comprehensive then your standard road-worthy inspection – in a roadworthy, the car is being certified that it is in current working condition; any element of the motor might be on the way out and need replacing within the month, but as long as it is working on the day of the roadworthy test then it will be certified. The point of a pre-purchase inspection is to let you know the overall health of the vehicle and it includes some of the following additional checks:

    • Brake fluid quality check – we test the brake fluid and provide the percentage in the report.
    • Coolant system check – we always give a percentage of the coolant in the report to ensure that it meets manufacturers standard.
    • Battery health check.

    Roadworthy Certificates

    Roadworthy Certifications

In Queensland, by law, anyone selling a used vehicle must provide an up-to-date roadworthy certificate. The certificate must be provided by a qualified mechanic and it states that the vehicle meets the minimum required levels of safety to be driven on the road.

Sunshine Steering have been providing roadworthy certification for vehicles for over 15 years now. We are located in Palmwoods and provide mechanical services to all Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Nambour and Palmwoods areas. We employ 4 full time mechanics as well as an apprentice and a trades assistant, so you will never have to wait long to get your car looked at.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the roadworthy certification process, contact Sunshine Steering today on (07) 5478 8020.

What is included in a roadworthy certification?

When you bring your car in for a roadworthy, we’ll take it for a quick drive and then inspect some of the basic elements of the vehicle that contribute to the car’s safety and drivability.

Some of the vehicle’s components that we check include:

    Logbook Servicing

    Logbook Servicing

The experienced mechanics at Sunshine Steering have been performing logbook services on vehicles of all makes and models for over 15 years now. We work with both genuine and after-market parts and provide a full report of our findings at the end of every service.

When you drop your car off for servicing at our workshop we will happily give you a lift anywhere in the local area that you need to go – so if you need a ride to work, just let us know in advance and we’ll get you there. If we notice anything out of the ordinary during the inspection and service, we’ll always give you a call and let you know how much it will cost to fix it before we do anything else – so you will always know how much it is going to cost.

An additional service that we provide is our ‘Travellers Inspection” – this service is designed for anyone who is about to set out on a big journey or holiday in their car and wants to make sure that everything is in working order before they leave. We will conduct a thorough inspection of all elements of your engine, steering and electrical and will let you know if there is anything that needs to be fixed or replaced before you set off.

If you have any questions or would like to enquire about our logbook servicing or travellers inspection services, contact us on (07) 5478 8020 today.

    IAME Members

Sunshine Steering are members of the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers (IAME). The IAME is responsible for setting the standards for logbook servicing in Australia, and when you get your vehicle serviced at Sunshine Steering you will be receiving best quality service possible.

In addition to being members of the IAME, we are also certified REPCO mechanics, which means that any service or mechanical work that we perform on your vehicle is guaranteed nationally by all other certified REPCO mechanics.

    Tyres and Wheel Alignment

    Tyres and Wheel Alignments

Sunshine Steering provide a huge range of tyre brands and options at some of the most competitive prices you’ll find. We also offer a very comprehensive wheel balance and alignment service that involves a lot more then just the standard toe set alignment that is often performed as a free service. Our service, called a full geometric wheel alignment, covers all of the different components and will increase the lifespan of your tyres significantly while providing maximum drivability and comfort.

If you have any questions or would like more information about any of our wheel balancing, wheel alignment or tyre selection services, give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 today – we provide free estimates over the phone.

    Wheel Balance and Alignment

If you are noticing that your car is becoming more difficult to drive and seems to have a mind of its own, often veering to the left or right slightly, then it may be time for a wheel balance and alignment. At Sunshine Steering, we provide a Full Geometric Wheel Alignment, which involves checking and setting all of the following:

    • Camber
    • Caster
    • Set Bank
    • Rear Camber Tow
    • Key Pin Inclination
    • Steering Access Inclination

Having a full geometric wheel alignment performed on your vehicle every 10 – 15,000km is important to make sure that everything is square and where it should be – you do not want your car to be bent, laddered or off-set. It is especially important if you live on a dirt road or regularly drive through areas with a lot of pot-holes (or have a bad habit of driving into or hitting curbs!) because these things can knock your alignment out of place.

    Tyre Brands We Work With:

    • Bridgestone
    • Maxtrek
    • Michelin
    • Kumho
    • Federal
    • Hankook
    • Goodyear
    • Dunlop
    • And more…

    Batteries

Sunshine Steering Can Replace The Car Battery For Any Make or Model

We also offer a battery test in-house so if you are not sure whether your battery needs to be replaced or repaired, you can bring your vehicle in and we’ll check all of the components and make sure that it is charging correctly.

A lot of modern day motor vehicles have to use specific batteries so that they can partner up with the car’s computer – at Sunshine Steering, we have a special tool that allows us to save all of the car’s settings and we are experts at re-programming the car’s computer so that it knows exactly what kind of battery it is using.

If you have any questions regarding replacing, repairing or checking the health of your car battery, give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 today. We provide free estimates over the phone for all of our services.

    AC Delco Batteries

We stock a wide range of AC Delco Batteries including the Amaron and Power-Sonic sub-brands. AC Delco Batteries are a great option for anyone who drives a 4-wheel-drive and does a lot of towing and camping because they offer more power.

All Amaron Batteries come with a 2-year warranty and the Power-Sonic range comes with a 12-month warranty. Sunshine Steering carry all sizes within the range, so if you are not sure which brand and size will work best for you, give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 and we’ll help you figure it out.

    Alco Batteries

Alco Batteries are fully-sealed calcium batteries, and are a great option for anyone who goes travelling overseas or interstate a lot and leaves their vehicle behind for weeks or even months at a time. Whereas a normal battery would require charging before your car would turn on, the alco batteries offer more longevity – in most cases, your car will just turn on after an extended period of non-use.

Alco and Apex batteries come with a 2-year warranty and Sunshine Steering offer all sizes within the range.

    Seat Belt & Child Restraints

Why Do I Need Child Restraint Anchor Points?

In Queensland, there are laws that state how a child restraint or booster seat should be installed and used. Not having the seat installed correctly can land you a nasty fine as well as up to three demerit points for each incorrectly restrained child. You also run the risk of your child getting seriously injured if you are in an accident.

Sunshine Steering are Australian Design Rules (ADR) approved, which means that we are authorised to both certify and install seat belts and child restraint anchor points to Australian and Queensland standards.

To enquire about our seat belt and child restraint anchor point inspection and installation services, call Sunshine Steering today on (07) 5478 8020.

Seat Belt and Child Restraint Certification

Sunshine Steering are authorised to inspect the installation of seat belts and anchor points for child restraints and booster seats and then issue ADR approvals to state that they meet Australian standards.

When you bring your vehicle in for the inspection, we will check that all of the safety aspects meet ADR standards and then if it passes all of the requirements we send the paperwork off to the Department of Transport to inform them that your car meets Australian standards.

Seat Belt and Child Restraint Installation

A lot of utes and vehicles that have small backseats do not come with anchor points for child restraints because they have no space between the seats and the actual cab. Without the anchor point, you cannot connect up your baby seat or capsule.

Sunshine Steering can install an anchor point in your ute or vehicle that meets ADR standards – this will not only help you dodge a hefty fine and 3 demerit points, but more importantly, it will ensure that your children are safely restrained in case of an accident.

    Automatic Transmissions

    Automatic Transmission Servicing and Flushing

The standard vehicle needs to have its transmission serviced every 40,000kms, but if you are regularly towing heavy loads like boats or caravans then you should look at getting it done more frequently. At Sunshine Steering we provide automatic transmission servicing as well as a full flush service that removes 100% of the oil in the transmission system.

Sunshine Steering are honest mechanics – we will always be upfront about the cost of our services and if we find anything extra that needs to replaced or repaired during a service, we will always call you and give you a quote before we move forward with the job. At the end of each service we give you a report stating what we have performed on the vehicle, and because we are authorized REPCO mechanics, our work is guaranteed Australia-wide by all other REPCO mechanics.

If you have any questions about automatic transmission servicing or would like to receive a free over-the-phone quote, then give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 today.

    Automatic Transmission Flushing:

At Sunshine Steering, we have invested in a piece of machinery that flushes 100% of the oil out of your transmission system. The standard transmission system holds 9 litres of oil, and when you perform a simple oil drain, you are only removing about 3 litres of oil – so you are actually only replacing a third of the oil in the system. The other 6 litres are still in there, and the only way to get them out completely is by flushing them out with special machinery. The machine will flush the automatic transmission system including the automatic cooler and the automatic transmission itself.

    ADR Modifications

    ADR Modifications and Certifications

Anytime you make a modification to your vehicle, it has to comply with the Australian Design Rules (ADR). The rules are in place to protect the safety of all of the passengers in the car, and if your modifications do not meet these standards, you could be issued a fine and demerit points.

Sunshine Steering are a Certified ADR Mechanic which means that we can not only make the modifications to ADR standards but we can also certify any modifications that you have had done elsewhere.

If you would like more information about ADR modifications and certifications, or would like to request an estimate, give us a call on (07) 5478 8020 today.

    ADR Modifications:

If you are thinking of putting a bigger engine in your car, adding a turbo or putting in roll bars, then contact Sunshine Steering. Our experienced mechanics are qualified and certified to make modifications to vehicles that comply with Australian Design Rules.

Some of our most common modifications include:

Once the modifications are complete we send a copy of the paperwork to the Department of Transport to state that the alterations were completed by a qualified mechanic and that they meet the ADR requirements for safety.

    ADR Certifications:

If you have had modifications done on your vehicle and you are not sure if they meet ADR standards, bring your car into Sunshine Steering and we’ll check the quality of the work. We will inspect all of the safety aspects of the alterations and make sure that the welding and engineering practices comply. If your vehicle passes the inspection then we will sign it off and send the paperwork to the Department of Transport.
